Buheri Farms
Buheri Farms in Katito
Together with our long-standing partner Edward Kute, we have launched another project in Katito, a small town in Kisumu County near Lake Victoria: Buheri Farms.
Buheri Farms has existed since 2017. This is a vegetable farm that is run using sustainable technologies. Since 2017, we have implemented various processes together with Edward to make management more sustainable and ecological. Drip irrigation minimizes water consumption, seven ponds store up to 300,000 liters of water and shade nets reduce the damage caused by strong sunlight.
By 2030, Buheri Farms should be a successful, regional company that is operated sustainably using climate-resilient technology.
In addition to growing various vegetables, plans are underway for our first spirulina tank on site.
Spirulina
In addition to establishing innovative cultivation methods for vegetables and fruit, we have also started to set up a new spirulina farm in Katito together with Edward. He has discovered that naturally growing spirulina can be found in nearby Lake Simbi. Resident flamingos, for which spirulina serves as a food source, were a sign of spirulina deposits in the lake. He therefore had the idea of testing the quality and composition of the lake’s water. The water quality turned out to be suitable for spirulina cultivation. We then decided, together with Edward, to build a new breeding facility on the shore of the lake and use the water there for it. A first small test tank has already been built by Edward and a spirulina mother culture has been introduced. As soon as the algae in the tank has successfully we will start building a large facility for spirulina cultivation.
My interest in sustainable agriculture stems from a multi-layered concern for the preservation of the environment, food security and community wellbeing. By advocating and engaging in sustainable agricultural practices, I aim to mitigate environmental degradation, ensure the availability of nutritious food for future generations and promote a resilient local economy. Through this perspective, sustainable agriculture becomes a way to achieve a harmonious balance between the needs of people and the health of our planet.
