Yesterday was a special day for us at Thriving Green: As part of One World Day 2024 in Augsburg, we were able to ceremoniously receive the funding check for our current project in Kenya – presented by Minister of State Eric Beißwenger, Bavarian State Ministry for European Affairs and International Affairs, as part of the Bavarian State Chancellery’s “Development in Partnership (EiP) 2025” funding program.
The project made possible by this funding is entitled “Spirulina in Wajir”. The aim is to combat malnutrition in the arid and structurally weak region of Wajir in north-eastern Kenya in the long term. Together with the Wajir Smart Learning Foundation, we are building a spirulina plantation with two large pools in greenhouses on the grounds of the SAADA Integrated Academy. In future, the nutrient-rich microalgae will supply around 50 schoolchildren with five grams of spirulina each day – as a healthy supplement to school meals. In addition to directly improving the nutritional situation, the project also pursues an educational goal: in a spirulina work group, the schoolchildren learn about sustainable agriculture and nutrition in a practical way.
The funding is part of “Development in Partnership (EiP)”, a program of the Bavarian State Chancellery that specifically supports projects of Bavarian One World actors in African countries. The aim is to promote partnership-based, developmentally effective projects at eye level – and it is precisely this approach that we at Thriving Green have been committed to since our foundation. The funding enables small organizations like ours to implement locally effective projects that bring about long-term change.
The setting for the handover of the funding cheque was just as special: One World Day, organized by Eine Welt Netzwerk Bayern e.V., brings together numerous initiatives, organizations, educational stakeholders and committed individuals from all over Bavaria once a year. In addition to information stands, workshops and discussions on global justice, sustainability and fair trade, this year’s event featured a varied program – from music and smoothie bike activities to a clothes swap party and a hands-on climate conference.
Thriving Green has itself been a member of the One World Network Bavaria for many years and benefits from the exchange, networking and shared vision: a fairer world in which sustainable development, global solidarity and partnership-based cooperation are not just goals, but a living reality.
We are delighted that our commitment has been recognized and would like to thank the Bavarian State Chancellery for its trust and financial support. The construction of the new spirulina plant in Wajir is already in full swing – we’ll soon have the first insights into the progress on site!
💚🌱 Stay tuned – we’ll keep you up to date!
