Wajir smart learning (WASLE)

The Wajir smart learning foundation (WASLE) is a Kenyan organization that brings digital teaching methods to schools in Wajir, Kenya. To this end, they have created a server on which the learning content is stored digitally. These can then be accessed offline via laptops or tablets. She also looks at the impact of drought and climate change on regions in Kenya and how the local population can be fed despite the challenges. The initiative has therefore been looking into alternative cultivation methods, such as spirulina cultivation, for some time. They have also set themselves the goal of informing the public about innovative nutritional concepts such as spirulina. Local people should understand the benefits of superfoods for their diet. This is the only way to get them to accept the new food. You can find out more about the organization’s projects on their website.

The ambitious work of WASLE appealed to us. So we were immediately motivated when the chairman of WASLE, Dalmas Otieno Adongo, wrote to us and asked if we would like to set up a spirulina plant in Wajir together with them. Together, we want to use our expertise to build a spirulina farm on one of their local school grounds.

Spirulina in Wajir

Wajir Smart Learning operates schools at various locations. We had the water quality tested at three locations to determine which site was best suited for growing spirulina. As described on our page about spirulina, the algae requires salty, alkaline water for its growth. Based on the three water samples, we decided to grow spirulina in Wajir at the Saada Integrated Academy together with WASLE. To help local people get used to the unfamiliar food supplement, we initially want to combine spirulina with familiar foods, such as adding spirulina to a nut mix. The first step is to build a small test tank and introduce a spirulina mother culture. The prototype is intended to provide information on what adjustments need to be made in order to successfully cultivate spirulina on site. As soon as breeding is established, the aim is to ensure a sustainable supply for the local population.
