Three years ago, we started with a crazy idea: to grow an algae in the desert to fight hunger and malnutrition. From this idea, Thriving Green was born and we now supply people with the superfood spirulina at two locations in Kenya. We have managed to help people with our algae and build a large network of valuable partners. We have received several awards for our work, including one from the German President as one of the 100 best ideas in Germany as part of “Land der Ideen” and from the GreenTec Awards, the largest and most important environmental prize in the world.
Now YOU get the opportunity to be a part of it and go to Kenya as an intern for Thriving Green.
The most exciting internship of your life
You will get the chance to gain leadership experience in an award-winning project by taking over the management of one of our sites and actively fighting against hunger and malnutrition.
Your main tasks will include supervising and optimizing the cultivation of our superfood, organizing for an expansion of the site and building more spriulina tanks. You’ll get the unique opportunity to experience Kenyan culture firsthand and develop intercultural skills while expanding existing partnerships and forging important new ones on the ground. You can bring your own strengths and interests to the table, and you’re looking for new locations in East Africa. In your time you will gain unique experiences and grow beyond yourself.
Jakob Uttenthaler (Economics and Geography student, April-May 2019) is one of four interns who have been on the ground in Kenya within the last year. He reports that “he was able to build up a number of soft skills such as flexibility, willingness to perform as well as self-responsible and proactive work, in addition to tangible gains in knowledge and professional experience, which definitely extend beyond professional application contexts and consequently have a significant influence on personality development.
Preparation and procedure
Before your trip to Kenya, you will meet the team behind Thriving Green in person. We will prepare you for your internship and your tasks and together we will think about how you can contribute your strengths and interests.
During your time in Africa we will be in close contact with you and support you with know-how. You will live with our local project partner and have your own room with electricity and running water.
After your internship you will have the opportunity to travel through the fascinating nature of East Africa and observe the breathtaking wildlife in national parks or relax on beautiful beaches. Upon your return to Germany, there will be a debriefing of the internship with the Thriving Green board of directors and you will receive an internship certificate. Depending on the course of study, the internship may possibly be recognized as a course credit.
