Spirulina-Pilotprojekt

Im April 2017 haben wir den ersten Stein für unsere Pilotfarm in Nariokotome gelegt. Nariokotome ist ein kleines Dorf im Nordwesten Kenias im Turkana-County. Die Lebensbedingungen sind hier sehr schwierig. Turkana ist eine der heißesten, trockensten und ärmsten Regionen der Welt. Temperaturen von über 45°C und extrem salziges Grundwasser machen es nahezu unmöglich, konventionelle Landwirtschaft zu betreiben. Daraus resultieren schwerwiegende Folgen für die Bewohner: 91% der Bevölkerung sind untergewichtig und 1 von 4 Kindern stirbt vor dem 5. Lebensjahr. Verantwortlich dafür ist vor allem der Proteinmangel. Zusätzlich beträgt das durchschnittliche Tageseinkommen nicht mehr als umgerechnet 1,50 €. Diese extremen Umweltbedingungen, die für herkömmliche Anbaumethoden ein großes Problem darstellen, sind optimal für den Anbau von Spirulina.

Deswegen haben wir beschlossen, genau dort unsere erste Spirulina-Farm zu errichten. Bei unserer Pilotfarm arbeiten wir mit der „Missionary Community of Saint Paul the Apostle“ (MCSPA) zusammen. Diese Organisation ist in mehreren Ländern vertreten und stellt stets eine wichtige Stütze für die vor Ort lebenden Menschen dar. Neben Mitgliedern der Mission waren auch Einheimische aus dem Dorf von Anfang an von unserer Idee fasziniert, wie beispielsweise unsere heutigen Farmmanager Joseph und Thomas. Vor allem Joseph war sofort begeistert, da er sich schon immer für Biologie interessiert hat. Beide Männer haben mit Thriving Green einen Job gefunden, den sie lieben.

Seit dem Bau unseres ersten Beckens im April 2017 haben wir den Standort vergrößert und weiterentwickelt. Beispielsweise schützt inzwischen ein Netz die Spirulina-Becken vor Sand, der vom Wind reingeweht werden könnte. Getrocknet wird das Spirulina anschließend in der Sonne. Das benötigte Wasser beziehen wir von einer Grundwasserpumpe auf dem Gelände. Durch den sehr hohen Salzgehalt im Grundwasser ist es bestens geeignet für die Kultivierung unserer Alge. Der Anbau ermöglicht es den Dorfbewohnern, sich selbstständig mit ausreichend Nährstoffen zu versorgen und damit dem Problem der Mangelernährung entgegenzuwirken. Nach Inbetriebnahme des Standorts und Ausbildung der Farmmanger wurde das Projekt 2019 an die MCSPA übergeben. Diese trägt seitdem eigenständig die Verantwortung für die Entwicklung des Standorts. Dieser Standorte diente uns als Pilotprojekt, bei dem wir viel Erfahrung sammeln konnten.
