The time has come: spirulina is being harvested in Wajir!

After proudly receiving the funding check for our Wajir project from the “Eine Welt Netzwerk Bayern” (One World Network Bavaria) in July, we are now delighted to report that our spirulina plant in Wajir has been up and running since September! The first harvests show that what began as an idea is now a reality.

Over the past few months, we have been working intensively with our partners Eddy and Dalmas, as well as many helping hands from the local organization WASLE and the SAADA Integrated Academy in Wajir. The result: two greenhouses with spirulina tanks and drying chambers are now complete and have been in operation since September. Since the start of the harvest, we have been producing 3–4 kg of fresh spirulina daily. Over 16 kg of dried spirulina is already available, and some of it has already been successfully distributed among the population. The first step toward acceptance was a complete success: families are mixing the spirulina powder into their meals, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! The superfood is well received and is perceived as an enrichment to everyday life.

This is a decisive moment for us: we didn’t just want to build another spirulina plant, we wanted to establish a sustainable, locally based food system together with the community in Wajir. The good start shows that we are on the right track.

At the same time, preparations are underway for the next, equally important step: integrating spirulina into the everyday school life of the children at the SAADA Integrated Academy. Our plan is to mix spirulina into the school porridge every day, thereby combining nutrition, health, and education in both the short and long term. At the same time, a spirulina working group will be set up, in which schoolchildren will learn in a practical way how sustainable agriculture works and how nutrition and the environment are linked. In this way, we want to raise awareness, impart knowledge, and at the same time contribute to food security.

This success is only possible thanks to the close cooperation with our local partners, their commitment on the ground, and the support of the “One World Network Bavaria.” We would like to thank everyone who helped make our vision a reality!

Now that the production base is in place, we are looking forward to the coming months with anticipation and motivation. We are currently in the process of establishing a local network to which our surplus spirulina can be sold. These revenues will enable our spirulina farm to become self-sustaining, representing a long-term investment in the region and thus providing stability and sustainability for the community in Wajir.

💚🌱 Stay tuned! We’ll keep you up to date!
